I once read a suggestion (probably from the publication Magnificat) that we each, some time, write our own Magnificat. (Mary’s is recorded in the gospel of Luke 1: 46-55, at the time she was visiting her cousin Elizabeth). Here is mine for today:
I pray that my soul will magnify you Lord,
because I often rejoice that you reached down to offer me salvation;
for you have seen how inept I can be, as an ambassador for you,
and you have more-than-noticed my frustrations and present sufferings.
You who is mighty- the first and the last-
have done great things for me and for my family,
both in the past and right now in our current crisis;
Holy is your name
You have been merciful to me so often, even when
I have not feared you or lived by your precepts;
your patience astounds me
My pride has caused me to alienate friends and family;
I have argued too much with those whom I love;
I have given others the impression that I am holier than they
Thankfully, you continue to show me the path to humility, even when I choose not to take it;
I often wonder how I will raise teenagers, what I will do when I lose my mother,
and if I will be able to function without a spouse;
Your power is made great in my weakness
I have been hungry and restless for so long,
and you have filled me, quite literally, with good things;
In your mercy you are helping the Church through difficult times,
and the gates of Hell are not prevailing against her, just as you promised.
I am eternally grateful to be counted in that Body.
So, what will your Magnificat be today?
