images-2The Chicks love Valentine’s Day – mostly because of the chocolate and flowers.  Who can resist an infusion of chocolate in the middle of a dreary, rainy southern winter?  So in preparation for Valentine’s Day, we decided to do a little research to find out just who is responsible for those red heart-shaped boxes filled with delectable candy and surprise cream fillings –  because we would like to thank him!

Turns out, little is known about St. Valentine.  According to Catholic Online, the origin of St. Valentine and exactly how many St. Valentines there were remain a mystery.  Historians believe that St. Valentine was a priest in Rome who assisted the martyrs in the persecution under the reign of Claudius II.  The first representation of St. Valentine was found in an illustrated book in 1493.  The book details that Valentinus was caught marrying Christian couples and aiding any Christians who were being persecuted.  He was arrested and imprisoned.  Claudius took a liking to this prisoner – until Valentinus tried to convert the Emperor to Christianity.  He was then condemned to death.  While awaiting execution, he restored sight to the jailer’s daughter.  One legend says that on the eve of his death, he wrote a farewell note to the jailer’s daughter and signed it, “from your Valentine.”

St. Valentine is the patron saint of engaged couples, bee keepers, epilepsy, fainting, greetings, happy marriages, love, lovers, plague, travelers, and young people.  The Chicks think chocolate lovers should be added to the list!

Enjoy your cream filled chocolates this Valentine’s Day!
