July 1, 2010. The race is on. I seem to be having a little more success with the tomatoes (the only thing I was willing to try) while Chick A is having great success with her jalapeno peppers (show off).
After waking up in a cold sweat over the possibility that a squirrel might find my summer project, I went ahead and picked my first tomato to let it finish ripening on the window sill in the sun. The kids thought it was a little too early for picking. I didn’t care-I wasn’t going to chance it and suffer the devastation that would have followed a tomato kidnapping.
I am hoping to pluck the rest of the beauties from the vine before any of those pesky squirrels or chipmunks realize what is happening right in their own back yard. Things are looking up for tomato pie, tomato sandwiches, and BLTs!

How hot is it where you are? My tomato plants have produced exactly one tomato per vine, and I was told that they won’t put out fruit above 90 degrees. I am going to try to keep them alive until fall so that I might get some tomatoes then.

Dorian-
It has been over 90 degrees several days in June, so I have no explanation as to why I am getting some tomatoes! It is the strangest thing- I just stuck the plant in the pot with a little mulch on top of the container soil. No fertilizing- I am too lazy for that- just watering (and I have even missed some days on that, too). I’ve harvested three of them so far and will pick the others soon. I’m interested to see if another round will grow later in the summer. Good luck!

Hi ya’ll!
I met both of you when you spoke at my church circle recently. (St Ignatius). I really enjoyed your talk and wanted to let you know that I’ve linked your blog to mine. (I guess we’re “blog buddies” now.)
About tomatoes, none of mine are ripe yet, but the plants are large and mighty. My problem is a constant battle with squirrels – last year they stole all my Mr Stripeys and ate them on the fence-post right in front of my dining room window. The nerve!
I had a friend tell me that if you cover the green tomato with a cut-off section of pany hose, it can still grow, but the squirrels won’t touch it. I’m going to try dressing up my tomatoes today to see how it works. I’ll let you know in case you’re interested how it turns out!
