Thanks to Friend of the Chicks (FOC) Kathleen Swann, our most recent summer road trip to the Georgia coast included not one but two stops at magnificent Catholic churches in the Diocese of Savannah. Kathleen grew up and was married at St. Joseph ‘s Catholic Church in Macon, and she thought we might want to see it on our way to Savannah. Prior to her suggestion, we always had thought of a “stop in Macon” to be eating at the Cracker Barrel on Riverside Drive. So, we were stunned and delighted to discover St. Joseph’s, perched on a hill overlooking the downtown area. You will want to see this magnificent church in person if you ever are in middle Georgia. For starters, explore their website, a most inviting and interesting site recounting the history of the church and the beginnings of the Catholic Christian community in this part of the state.
The second “Georgia Gem” that we discovered on our trip was The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Savannah. This majestic cathedral is simply a feast for the senses. So much art, so much statuary, so much color. Attending mass there was a privilege and an incredibly uplifting experience. The architecture and details both inside and outside the church attest to the deep faith of that community and stir up a sense of appreciation for our brothers and sisters in Christ who found it fitting to create such a reverent place of worship.

Wow! St Joseph’s is beautiful – and in Macon no less! Looks like it was definitely worth the trip.
